The MacRae Clan in the Early Years

During the early years when residential basements were mainly used for coal and food storage (and the occasional hogmánay), we were one of the first contractors in the Toronto area to realize the incredible benefits of a fully dry, entirely usable basement.

Specialization

Noreen and John MacRae welcome three children into the world and although times were tough in the early years they always found a way to make ends meet. GJ MacRae slowly begins to gain traction.

The Next Generation

The kids become involved on the weekends helping Dad clean up job sites while they study and nibble on timbits. Gavin shows a keen interest in masonry and the seed continues to grow.

A New Century

GJ MacRae becomes a full service foundation repair company specializing in basement waterproofing, structural foundation repair and underpinning. The kids work with the crews during the summer and the collective interest continues to expand.

The Transition

More specialized projects become attractive as our expertise and experience grows. Platon replaces tintest, weeping tile detail changes within the OBC, John transitions to sales and Gavin starts his first full time crew.

Back then, pickup trucks were much rarer than today, so our first new pickup truck was an exciting accomplishment for our family!

A reference from Bob Patterson of CFRB (now Newstalk 1010 / Bell Media). It was an excellent opportunity for John in the early years.

1988: The Kids Keep Growing

The kids grew up in these old pickup trucks and were always excited to play in them with Dad after a long week on the job site.

Ottawa’s Carleton Place contracted John MacRae and his brother Don MacRae for many fulfilling years of reliable repairs and service.

Hi, thanks for watching our video about Outside Basement Waterproofing repair techniques. The process of outside basement waterproofing (or exterior basement waterproofing) is as follows: - First, we lay out tarps and excavate to the footings of the basement by hand - Next, we clean the concrete foundation wall and repair any masonry defects in the wall (cracks, tie rod holes, voids) etc. - Then we prime the concrete foundation wall and apply a rubberized membrane with fiberglass mesh. Another layer of rubberized membrane is then applied. - The final layer of the membrane is Platon drainage board. This is installed with expansive concrete anchors and a new weeping tile system. - Gravel is then installed on top of the new weeping tile system, and the excavation is backfilled and cleaned up! Sonotube foundation reinforcements are a process of fixing concrete foundations and structures made of circular tubes filled with concrete (sonotubes). This process involves digging and exposing the existing concrete sonotubes, installing shoring supports to hold up the foundation and removing the existing circular concrete supports. Then, new oversized sonotubes are installed and poured with new footings combined with a metal saddle bracket that connect directly to the structure. Once the new sonotubes cure, the shoring is removed and the soil is backfilled. Reinforcing a concrete foundation wall with carbon fiber is strengthening and stabilizing a cracked or bowed wall due to soil pressure, water damage, or structural failure. Carbon fiber is a strong and lightweight material that can resist tension and compression forces. Depending on the type and extent of the damage, it can be applied to the wall in the form of straps, sheets, or rods. The process involves the following steps: - Clean and prepare the wall surface by removing paint, dirt, or debris. Use a grinder or a wire brush to create a rough texture for better adhesion. - Measure and mark the layout of the carbon fiber reinforcement according to the design specifications. The reinforcement should follow the direction of the stress and cover the entire length of the crack or bow. - Cut the carbon fiber material to the required size and shape using scissors or a utility knife. Be careful not to damage or fray the fibers. - Using a roller or brush, apply an epoxy resin to the wall surface. This will act as glue and a protective coating for the carbon fiber material. - Press the carbon fiber material onto the wall surface and smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles. Make sure there are no gaps or overlaps between the pieces of fabric. - Apply another layer of epoxy resin over the carbon fiber material to seal it and create a smooth finish. Allow the epoxy resin to cure completely before applying any load or stress on the wall. To install structural carbon fiber to a concrete wall, you need to follow these steps: First, prepare the concrete surface by removing any coating, dust, or debris. You may need a grinder or a wire brush to do this. Then, mark out the layout of the carbon fiber fabric on the concrete surface according to the design specifications. Using a roller or a brush, apply a primer adhesive on the concrete surface. This will help the carbon fiber fabric bond to the concrete. Cut the carbon fiber fabric to the required size and shape using scissors or a utility knife. Prepare the impregnation adhesive by mixing the resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the impregnation adhesive on the carbon fiber fabric using a roller or a brush. Make sure to cover both sides of the fabric evenly. Apply the carbon fiber fabric onto the concrete surface as designed. Level the surface from one end to another. Apply impregnation adhesive again on the fabric to fill gaps or bubbles. Repeat the process for any additional layers of carbon fiber fabric if needed. Allow the impregnation adhesive to cure completely before applying any load or stress on the concrete structure. To cut a door through a concrete wall, you need to follow these steps: First thing is to measure the size of the door opening and mark it on both sides of the wall. Use a circular saw with a masonry blade to cut through the wall along the marked lines. You may need to make several passes to cut through the entire thickness of the wall. Remove any excess concrete and debris from the opening using a hammer and chisel or a pry bar. After that install a steel lintel above the opening to support the load of the wall. You may need to drill holes and use anchors or bolts to secure the lintel to the wall. Now, fit your door into the opening and use caulking or mortar to seal any gaps. You may need to shim or trim the door to make it fit properly. At last you need to install the door hardware such as hinges, lock, and handle. Job was done in 2 days which I was amazed it could be done that quickly! That’s a lot of pails of concrete and rock that had to be shuttled in and out of the house!
