With water seepage and mold, mildew growing everywhere, musty, damp smell, and water flooding during rain; the reason for all this? Water Leakage! This situation can arise due to insufficient interior basement waterproofing considerations, resulting in water entering through your basement floor and cracks in your foundation walls.

Interior Basement Waterproofing: Signs to Look For and Risks to Avoid

Basements are often overlooked until a problem appears. When water infiltration begins, it can lead to serious issues that affect your home, health, and wallet. Here are the key signs and consequences that your basement needs interior waterproofing.

Early Warning Signs of Water Problems

Excess moisture, wet patches on floors or walls, condensation, or a musty odor indicate that water is entering your basement.

Cracks in basement walls or floors allow water to seep in. These cracks often widen over time, increasing water penetration and structural risk.

White, powdery mineral deposits on concrete or masonry mean water is evaporating through your foundation.

Black spots, fuzzy patches, or musty odors suggest mold and mildew have taken hold. These thrive in damp environments and can create health issues.

Discolored patches, streaks, or peeling paint/wallpaper show ongoing water infiltration behind surfaces.

Major Consequences of Skipping Interior Waterproofing

Long-term water seepage weakens your home’s foundation and can lead to shifting, settling, and cracks that compromise the stability of the entire structure.

A wet basement can lower resale value. Buyers are hesitant to take on homes with water damage or foundation concerns.

Furniture, clothing, electronics, and storage items are easily ruined by moisture, mold, and mildew.

Higher humidity forces your HVAC system to run longer to maintain comfortable temperatures, increasing utility bills.

Moist basements attract pests like termites, cockroaches, and rodents, which cause additional damage and health risks.

Water damage that affects neighboring properties or undisclosed moisture problems during a home sale can lead to legal disputes.

Benefits of Interior Basement Waterproofing

We have years of basement waterproofing experience in the GTA, and here are some significant benefits of waterproofing the basement from the inside.

Enjoy a Dry Basement

Interior waterproofing for your basement means that you now have a leakproof and dry basement, your walls are sealed, and water cannot enter through your foundation. With waterproofed walls enjoy the peace of mind during a heavy rain storm knowing your basement walls are watertight.

No More Mold and Mildew

Damp and wet areas invite mold and mildew, which is not a good combination! This invites various health hazards and poor air quality. A basement is an area that needs to be better ventilated, and on top of that, having mold present isn't ideal. But, with interior basement waterproofing, you get dry and leakproof walls, so you no longer have to worry about mold or mildew on your walls.

More Usable Space

Having a dry basement means that you now have more usable space. Most basements are used just as laundry rooms and for storage, but a dry basement means that you can use it as a game room, lounge area or bedroom. If your basement isn’t tall enough, you can opt for basement underpinning for more headroom and a refreshed space!

Stronger Foundation Structural Integrity

Continuous hydrostatic pressure from outside can affect the foundation’s structural integrity. Due to the pressure, the walls move in and out, and that can cause the cracks to increase. All this can be avoided if you keep your basement walls dry and leakproof. Properly sealing your foundation cracks and applying interior basement waterproofing systems will ensure that your walls are safe and robust from any damage imposed by water. Having dry foundation walls means that the foundation’s structure is maintained.

Higher Property Value

Every property buyer is looking for a home with a spacious, functional basement that remains dry. Extra space is a desirable feature in any home, and most buyers are willing to pay a premium for it. A dry basement transforms the space into a usable area and becomes a valuable selling point for your home. By investing in basement waterproofing, you not only enhance your enjoyment of the basement while living in the house but also stand to gain a good return when selling.

Our Interior Basement Waterproofing Process

01

The first step in the interior basement waterproofing process is to dig around the inside of your basement walls, approximately 12” to 15” inches wide, through the concrete floor. We then remove around 10 to 12 inches of soil from the trench. Small holes are then drilled at the base of the walls to allow trapped water in the foundation wall to pass through into weeping tile or drains.

02

The next step is to install a weeping tile drainage system at the base of the trench. This is installed to collect and drain all the excess water from the membrane and into a sump pump or floor drain. The excess water from the holes is collected with the weeping tile drain.

03

A drainage membrane is then installed around the perimeter of the repair area. This membrane helps to redirect the water towards the drainage system below the concrete floor that diverts to a sump box or floor drain.

04

Three-quarters of the trench is then filled with clear gravel. Gravel allows for rapid drainage and works well with the weeping tile drain. A sump pump is installed at an appropriate location to pump out all the water collected in the sump basin, or a connection to an existing floor drain is made.

05

The concrete floor is then reinstalled and floated to level. After the cleanup, the interior basement waterproofing process is concluded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waterproofing the basement from the inside ensures that your basement remains dry for half the cost of an exterior waterproofing repair method. Any excess water entering the basements is redirected away from the walls using weeping tile and sump pumps.

Weeping tile installation is vital in moving the redirected groundwater out of your basement.

DIY foundation repair is not recommended, not to mention the amount of labour required to complete a project like this correctly.

It isn’t easy to give an exact time frame because the project’s duration depends upon various factors and might take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Still, after a proper inspection, we can give you a rough estimate of the duration.

Costs vary based on linear footage, access, ceiling height, and specifications. Call us today for a free quote.

Generally speaking, interior repairs can repair minor volume issues, and exterior maintenance is better at solving severe infiltration, but call us today for a free quote.

Common signs include dampness, musty odors, water stains, efflorescence, or visible cracks on basement walls.

Properly executed interior basement waterproofing can provide long-lasting protection, but regular eavestrough, grade, and sump pump maintenance is advised to ensure its effectiveness over time.

Interior basement waterproofing typically does not require extensive excavation (compared to exterior excavation). It focuses more on managing water by installing drainage systems, using sump pumps, and applying waterproofing materials to the inside of the foundation walls.
