First, we need to find all the cracks in the basement walls. We set up tarps and start digging up to the footings to establish all the cracks on the wall. It is important that we go below the grade when looking for cracks.
We use a wire brush to clean the exposed walls and chisel out the cracks. We apply hydraulic cement in the cracks using a trowel. After the cement is set, the cracks are repaired.
We then apply a quick-drying primer to the foundation walls. The primer is crucial to provide extra adhesion to the walls in the next steps in the waterproofing process.
A layer of special Hydroshield is applied on the entire walls using a trowel. This rubberized membrane does not allow any liquid, air or moisture through them. Then we apply a layer of fiberglass mesh on top of the rubberized membrane. This fiberglass mesh provides flexibility to the membrane. Another layer of Hydroshield is applied again on top of the fiberglass mesh. This creates a double coat and gives extra protection.
A thick plastic layer is applied on top of the membrane while the patch is still sticky. This creates a quadruple layer of protection on the walls. Then we install a Platon drainage board on the top. This protects the membrane during backfilling and also acts as an additional layer of protection against water.
We then check the existing weeping tile drainage. Necessary repairs or replacement is carried out. A filter sock is installed to clean fine particles from groundwater and ease the drainage process.
The last step in this process is backfilling. We start by filling clear gravel on top and around the weeping tile drainage. This helps to get a clear flow for drainage. The native soil is then poured back into the trench. We power tamp the soil every 6" -12" inches. This helps to keep the membranes locked in place and also helps to restore the original grading of the ground.
Now, a termination strip is attached to the top of the Platon drainage board to ensure that the strip does not separate from the board. The process is now complete. We now wash and sweep the repaired area. Now you have a completely waterproofed basement.
